- Shut down the water supply by accessing a zone valve or the whole house valve.
- Locate the source of water. If you cannot find the source, contact a plumber.
- Contact a cleaner who is certified in fire and water damage restoration.
- If there is standing water near electronics, shut off the electricity in that area at the breaker panel.
- If water is draining from ceiling electrical fixtures, shut down power to those electrical outlets.
- Remove any standing water by wet mopping and/or wet vacuuming. Only use a shop vac rated for water removal.
- Wipe water from hard surface furnishings.
- Remove wet cushions from upholstered furniture and prop against themselves or a wall.
- Remove wet area rugs from hard wood flooring and wall to wall carpet.
- Place plastic, aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
- Relocate affected wall hangings to a dry location.
- Clean and move any small contents in the affected area to dry locations in the building.
- During warmer months ventilate the building by opening windows to remove humid air or turn on air conditioner if available.
- If possible run a dehumidifier in affected areas.
